Life science applications are a huge challenge for information technology. On the one hand, we need to model highly complex phenomena, e.g. in drug discovery, that are poorly understood and have a low confidence. On the other hand, decisions based on results of information processing may have enormous consequences, for example, during medical interventions. Because of the increasing amount of data, information technology is becoming indispensable. The research area addresses the integration of complex information systems, domain modeling and visualization, data analysis and management.
The department Life Science Informatics (LIFE) started research in the fields of diagnostic and interventional medical imaging, minimally invasive and robot assisted surgery, pharmacology, biotechnology, assistive information systems and compensatory user interfaces in the early 90ies. The focus is on the interdisciplinary development of interactive systems based on experiences from cooperations in various application areas and the integration of relevant technologies (image analysis, dynamic modeling and visualization, distributed web information systems).
The department comprises some 30 researchers from various disciplines (computer science, physics, mathematics, cognitive psychology) who are engaged as a team in the integration of technologies and applications.
Our topics are:
Biotechnology
Image processing and data analysis of expression data (e.g. in proteomics); interactive data management; knowledge management in molecular biology; molecular visualization.
