POLAR uses RFID technology to support group awareness. Location data of a community of co-located workers on a certain floor in a building is collected and used to derive abstract online representations, which portray individuals as well as groups and provide a context for the group members' own activity. |

The goal of the lab is the development of a CommunityWare solution for B-IT ( → ) students. Based on a requirement analysis, the platform component (user-registration, interest profiles, communication forums, visualization of community-activities, etc. ) will be specified. This is followed by the realization of the components which can be based on existing software components. The lab work will be structured in working-groups. Each group will be responsible for one component of the platform. |

Virtual communities come close to the fundamental vision underlying the world-wide Web, creating information through cooperation and interaction among the community's members. The FIT community toolbar adds powerful functionality for communication and cooperation to Web portals, thus helping active virtual communities to start and flourish ( → ). Recently, we added Community2Go, a Web interface for small-screen devices. It makes the toolbar's functionality accessible on PDAs and smartphones and is highly customizable. |

The WiKo project improves cooperative knowledge management for knowledge-intensive services. Specifically, WiKo designs and develops, tests and evaluates a platform for cooperative online consultancy. The WiKo platform provides services that make online consultancy as rich as real-world consultancy. Consultants and clients are regarded as a community that collaboratively collects, structures, and maintains a shared knowledge base and keeps its members informed about the activities of others. |

Smartmaps provides users with an overview of activities in shared information spaces like shared file systems, Web sites, or shared workspaces in a treemap. The treemap is constructed from the shared artifacts, links from the Smartmap to the artifacts are established, and actions on artifacts result in color coding of the respective part of the Smartmap. This presentation of activity enables activity-based navigation and helps in becoming aware of potential collaborators and advice giving experts ( → ). |
