Industrial Metaverse

Remote maintenance and training in mechanical engineering and production

The Metaverse is being hyped as the next big thing on the Internet. Experts see great potential for assistance systems in production, maintenance, logistics, and mobility and transportation, among other fields. But many do not yet fully understand which technologies offer substantial benefits today and which potential challenges and opportunities they present for companies.

At HM23, Fraunhofer FIT will showcase the current status of the Industrial Metaverse, demonstrating an application for remote maintenance and training in mechanical engineering and production. It is based on fast wireless Internet, remote rendering of CAD data, and mobile mixed reality and virtual reality headsets. The system is currently being implemented and tested in the 5G Troisdorf IndustrieStadtpark project.

In the virtual space, lively discussion between the operators on site and a remote expert, who are both viewing a digital twin of the machine in the production line, is supported by avatars, pointing gestures, direct manipulation as well as audio and video communication.
