Human-AI Teaming: Human-centered Integration of Generative AI into Businesses

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) opens up new possibilities for businesses to increase productivity. However, success depends not only on technological capabilities but also on how generative AI systems are tailored to the needs of their human coworkers and the requirements of tasks and work contexts. We offer professional training courses, workshop formats, and assessment tools that support companies in establishing and advancing human-AI teaming.

Many organizations initially focus on technical feasibility when adopting generative AI. However, most technology-driven, one-size-fits-all approaches fall short in practice. Productive deployment requires an understanding of roles, tasks, usage contexts, and the needs of human coworkers.

This is where Human-AI Teaming comes in. As a part of our Human-Centered AI research, it addresses how generative AI systems should be designed and implemented for effective human-AI collaboration in the workplace. In addition to technology, interaction style, usability, and integration into organizational processes are crucial factors.

Human-AI Teaming Training Courses

In our professional training courses, we empower participants to design and deploy generative AI systems as part of a team. We start with suitable – "golden" – use cases and a sound ergonomic analysis of the tasks involved. From there, course participants learn how to derive user needs and define AI requirements based on them. This enables them to design meaningful task assignments between humans and AI that ensure efficiency, quality of work, and acceptance.

The course focuses on clearly defining roles and responsibilities, such as the different forms of AI integration (in, on, or out of the loop) and the role of AI in the process, including assistance and automation. Participants also learn to systematically evaluate and improve human-AI collaboration, focusing on cooperation, transparency, control, and alignment with the task and work context.

Complementary offerings include workshop formats that enable companies to devise human-centered approaches for designing and implementing GenAI assistants and agentic systems. We have also developed Assistant Experience (AsX), a tool that assesses the perceived quality of GenAI assistants and identifies functionalities that need improvement.

Initial applications with an international industry partner have demonstrated how human-AI teaming can be supported on a sound empirical basis and improved systematically.
