Digital Proofs of Origin for Sustainability: Assessing a Digital Identity-Based Approach in the Energy Sector
Climate change requires far-reaching measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Due to its high share of global greenhouse gas emissions, the energy sector is a particular focus of decarbonization measures (e.g., guarantees of origin for electricity). This requires precise and reliable data for measuring emissions. However, the current practice of calculating emissions manually and based on average values or estimates is often inaccurate and time-consuming. Against this background, our white paper presents and evaluates a concept for digital proofs of origin for electricity based on the Self-Sovereign Identity paradigm, thereby aiming to enhance the traceability of emissions.
